How to Protect Your Carpet from Staining?

Posted on Thursday 30 June 2022

Have you just laid a beautiful, new, fluffy carpet? It will feel amazingly soft under foot now, but can be hard to keep it that way. If you live in a busy household with kids, pets and family wandering about, carpet fibres will get worn down.

Carpets are a big investment and need care, so they last a good amount of time. Luckily, there are some simple and affordable ways to protect your new carpets from spills and stains. Here’s what you need to do.

Vacuum Regularly

Over time, dust and dirt will sink into the carpet making it look old and dingy.  If left, this dirt can be hard to remove, binding itself to the carpet. Regular vacuuming pulls up dirt and debris, while fluffing up the carpet fibres. This makes it look and feel fresh underfoot, plus helps it last a lot longer.

Clean Spills Immediately

If you spill food or drink on the carpet, clean it up immediately! The longer it’s left, the moisture will dry out, making it harder to remove. Never rub a stain, just dab with a dry cloth to absorb the liquid and follow specific cleaning advice for that stain.

Apply a Carpet Protectant

Many new carpets come with a protectant already added. If you don’t have one already, consider applying one. Carpet protectors repel liquids, stains and even soil, so it’s easier to eliminate muck when disaster happens. If you’re unsure how to apply a protectant yourself, ask your local Adelaide carpet cleaners to do it for you.

Use Rugs in High Traffic Areas

High traffic carpeted areas such as hallways and living rooms, often suffer increased wear and tear. If you have a new carpet, protect it by laying rugs near to sofas and by the front doorway. Encourage people to take their shoes off indoors, which will also help o minimiste staining. Clean your rugs at regular intervals and move them around to stop only one area getting flattened.

Call in Professional Adelaide Carpet Cleaners

No matter how well you vacuum, your carpets are still likely to get a little mucky over time. The only way to truly sanitise your carpets is by scheduling a professional carpet clean. The pros can eliminate stains deep down that are difficult to reach with regular cleaning methods. Aim to call in professional carpet cleaners at least once a year, or more often if you have pets and kids.
