Dirt, grime and bacteria live deep down in your carpets. And if not removed, this can lead to unpleasant odours lingering in the air. Alongside the smell, dirty carpets can lead to sickness for you and your family.
When carpets are kept fresh, they’re a joy to walk and sit on. But, the constant cleaning can get tedious. Luckily, there are many simple ways to keep your carpet smelling fresh, without spending your whole life vacuuming! Follow these seven simple tips.
1.Remove Shoes
Make it a house rule to remove shoes on entry. This not only prolongs your carpet, but keeps it smelling fresher for longer. All sorts of dust, dirt and grime gets stuck on the sole of shoes, which gets walked onto carpets. When this gets ground into the carpet pile, bad smells can form.
2.Good Ventilation
Another simple way to keep carpets smelling fresh is to ventilate each room. When fresh air gets to circulate, this pulls bad smells outside, freshening up the atmosphere.
3.Use Carpet Protectors
Add attractive rugs or runners to high traffic carpeted areas. This protects your carpets from wear and reduces the amount of bad smells attached to fibres. Of course, your rugs will need to be maintained with a regular vacuum. But, cleaning small rugs is easier than maintaining large carpets.
4.Sprinkle Baking Soda Before Vacuuming
Vacuuming helps to pick up dirt and grime from your carpets, but it doesn’t leave your carpet smelling nice. Baking soda is a proven odour absorber and soaks up lingering smells. Sprinkle it over your carpet and vacuum off, to get a fresh smelling carpet.
5.Steam Carpet Cleaning
While vacuuming keeps the carpet relatively clean. Nothing beats a deep down sanitisation. Professional steam carpet cleaning uses steam vapour that penetrates deep into the carpet fibre. Stains and dirt are agitated and lifted up along with bacteria, leaving your carpet looking and smelling fresh.
6.Remove Stains Immediately
A major cause of carpet smells is dried on stains and dirt. If you drop something on the carpet, take the time to remove it immediately. For recent stains, fill a bottle with a ¼ cup white wine vinegar, one tablespoon of dish soap and warm water. Spray onto the stain and blot with a clean dry towel until removed.
7.Use a Room Diffuser
An effective and simple way to keep your carpets smelling fresh is by using a room diffuser. Your carpets will soak up the scent from a diffuser, keeping it smelling great.
