5 Easy Ways to Remove Cigarette Smells from Furniture

Posted on Friday 13 August 2021

Have you inherited a trendy vintage couch from an Uncle? Or maybe you found an awesome fabric covered foot stool in a house clearance? Cool old furniture is great, but sometimes it comes with a few smells that are less than pleasant.

If the previous owner was a smoker, it’s likely the fabric of this pre-loved furniture has soaked up a few odours. Cigarette smoke lingers in furniture and in the home, well after it has been extinguished. But do not despair just yet, there are a few methods to get rid of the ashtray smell without using harsh chemicals.

Fresh Air

Fresh air is the solution for many things, including removing cigarette odours from upholstery. If you have the space, leave your smoky furniture outside covered over for several days. Alternately, open windows and put a fan on if moving the furniture isn’t an option.

Baking Soda

Sprinkle baking soda over your smoked up furniture and leave it for 30 minutes before vacuuming away. If the cigarette smell still lingers, sprinkle more baking soda and let it sit for up to two hours. Baking soda is efficient at absorbing cigarette odours and even musty smells, making it a great option for old furniture.

White Vinegar and Water

Make your own odour remover by mixing one-part white wine vinegar and two parts water in a spray bottle. Test your mix on a hidden part of your furniture to be sure it doesn’t affect the upholstery. If ok, lightly spray over the furniture and leave to air with the windows open. White wine vinegar is one of the best natural air fresheners and is anti-bacterial helping to kill germs and beat odours.

Homemade Fabric Refresher Spray

Another DIY option is to mix two cups of witch hazel and 20 drops of lemon essential oil in a spray bottle. Shake together and spray liberally over the smoky furniture. The lemon helps to break down oils and absorbs the smoke odour leaving your upholstery fresh.
