How Do You Get Pet Stains Out of Carpet?

Posted on Sunday 28 February 2021

Pets are lovely to have around the home. But, they often leave their mark in more ways than one! Especially as puppies, dogs may have accidents on your fresh, fluffy carpets. And puppies have no idea about wiping their paws after roaming around in the garden, meaning all sorts of mess and hair can dirty up your living spaces.

And alongside dirty paws, dogs have their own special smells that can attach themselves to carpet fibres and upholstery. Urine smells and dog smells need to be battled fast, otherwise they can linger in the air. Let’s take a look at the top ways to remove pet stains and smells from your carpets.

DIY Cleaning Methods

If you have time, it’s likely you have ingredients in your cupboard that can be made into a home stain cleaner. DIY cleaning methods save you a little cash but need a little elbow grease. Home stain removal can also be done with natural ingredients which are better for the environment. Always spot check a small area of carpet with your homemade solution, to ensure it doesn’t stain the carpet. Three DIY pet stain methods include;

  • Dishwasher detergent and warm water. Mix together and spray the solution onto the pet stain. Blot with a dry towel. Vacuum the area and repeat if necessary.
  • Baking soda and vinegar. Apply vinegar to the stained area and sprinkle baking soda on top. The area will start to bubble and you should cover it over and leave to dry. Once dried out, rinse the area with water, blot dry and vacuum to finish.
  • Ammonia mixed with water. Mix one cup of water with two tablespoons of ammonia. Spray or dab this onto the affected area. Blot with a clean towel and vacuum up any excess liquid

Shop Bought Pet Stain Remover

There are plenty of safe, effective store bought pet stain removers on the market. Recommended pet stain removers are Natures Miracle Dog Enzymatic Urine Destroyer and Rejuvenate Carpet and Upholstery Spot and Stain Remover.

Ensure you dry up as much pet mess as you can to begin. Spray on your shop bought stain remover and blot with a clean rag or towel. Rinse the area with warm water and then dry again with a towel. Vacuum and repeat if necessary.
