Posted on Sunday 16 October 2022

Couches get a lot of wear and tear over the years. We spend hours each day lounging on our favourite couch, which is why they often build up a few stains. Knowing how to clean a couch stain quickly, is a skill everyone should learn.

Whether its pet grime, a disastrous red wine spill, or a mystery stain that has been festering for years, this article is going to guide you to remove it effectively. But, before you get started, always read the couch manufacturers suggestions on the cleaning tag, to avoid using any unsuitable cleaning product.

Simple Guide to Cleaning Couch Stains According to Their Material

The recommended way to clean a couch stain is to wipe the couch with a relevant cleaning solution (which we will detail below), scrub the stained area and then leave it to dry. Follow these tips to clean your couch according to its material.

How to Clean a Leather Couch?

Leather couches come in a variety of finishes. It’s important to determine whether the leather of your couch is protected or unprotected before you get started. Contact the company website for guidance if it’s unprotected leather. Follow these steps to clean a stain from a protected leather couch:

  • Firstly, vacuum the couch to remove all debris
  • Wipe down the couch with a dry, clean microfiber cloth
  • Mix equal parts white wine vinegar, with warm water and dampen a cloth in the mixture
  • Gently rub the stained area, rising out the cloth regularly
  • Dry the area with a new, clean, microfiber cloth

How to Clean a Fabric Couch?

  • Vacuum your fabric couch and use a stiff bristled brush to loosen any dried on stains
  • Sprinkle baking soda over the entire couch and let it sit for around 20 minutes
  • Vacuum the couch again to remove the baking soda granules
  • For remaining stains, mix 1 tsp dishwashing liquid, 1Tbsp white wine vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle
  • Be aware that the mixture may fizz and bubble!
  • Spray the solution onto a clean, white cloth and gently dab and rub stains
  • Let the fabric dry completely before you use the couch again
