How to Get Nail Varnish Off Carpet?

Posted on Wednesday 31 August 2022

Not everyone has the time or money to go to a professional nail salon! To keep those nails looking red carpet ready, we have to do it ourselves, right? So, maybe you were rushing around before a night out and disaster strikes.

Your red nail varnish drips onto your fluffy white carpet!! Panic ensues as you try to think what to do, without smudging your freshly painted nails. Take a deep breath and let’s take a look at five proven DIY ways to get nail varnish out of carpet fast.

Vinegar

  • Pour a generous amount of white wine vinegar over the nail polish stain
  • Soak a clean, white rag in white wine vinegar and lay it over the stain
  • Allow this to sit for at least 10 minutes
  • After waiting. Take the vinegar soaked rag and blot the stain
  • Find a clean, damp rag and start to scrub the stain gently
  • Rinse with clean, warm water
  • Allow to air dry

Nail Polish Remover

  • This method works best on fresh nail polish stains
  • Test a small amount of nail polish remover on a covered part of the carpet. It can cause discolouration to some carpets
  • Make sure your nail polish remover is dye-free and non-acetone
  • Soak a clean rag in nail polish remover
  • Blot the stain gently until it comes away from the carpet
  • Dab with a clean, damp cloth to remove any left-over nail polish remover

Baking Soda and Ginger Ale

  • Cover the nail polish stain with baking soda
  • Soak the area with ginger ale
  • Let this combination sit for at least 10 minutes
  • Take a clean, damp rag and gently blot the area until the stain disappears
  • Leave to air dry
  • Vacuum over the area when dry to remove any baking soda particles

Hairspray

  • Find a bottle of hairspray that has a high alcohol content. Alcohol-free hairspray will not do the job
  • This method is most effective on already dried nail polish carpet stains
  • Use a knife to scrape off as much dried nail polish as possible and vacuum the area
  • Wet the stain with cold water
  • Spray over 10 – 15 pumps of hairspray
  • If you have, add a small amount of rubbing alcohol to the stain
  • Use an old toothbrush or soft bristled brush to scrub the stain
  • Let the stain air dry

Window Cleaner

  • Blot as much of the nail polish stain up with a cloth or paper towels
  • Apply a small amount of window cleaner to a sponge or dish cloth
  • Scrub the stain in a circular motion
  • Rinse the area with warm water
  • Allow to air dry and the stain should be gone
