How to Clean Different Carpet Types

Posted on Monday 19 December 2022

Carpets feel soft and fluffy underfoot. They’re warm in the winter and absorb loud sounds so you don’t wake up the neighbours. They also provide the feet with a good grip to prevent slips and falls. Carpets have so many benefits, which is why they’re a popular floor covering.

However, many homeowners are unaware what type of carpet they have and how to care for it properly. While it pays to bring in professional Adelaide carpet cleaners on a regular basis, let’s take a look at different carpet types and what each one needs to stay looking at its best.

What Are the Main Carpet Types?

The first question you need to ask yourself is do you have a loop pile carpet or a cut pile carpet? Once you know the answer to this question, you can decide the best way to clean it. Here are the two main carpet types and tips for cleaning each:

Cut Pile

Cut pile is most often found in residential properties. It incorporates a soft, fuzzy layer, that feels padded and comfortable underfoot. One downside is that it can be hard to wash on your own. However, this will depend on the quality of the shag. The various types of cut pile carpets include:

  • Cable
  • Frieze
  • Saxony
  • Textured

Cleaning tips: Vacuum your cut pile carpet once a week to remove embedded dirt. If you have pets, increase vacuuming frequency to twice weekly.

Loop Pile

Loop pile is way more durable than cut pile. This is why its most often used in businesses with high foot traffic such as hotels and shops. Loop pile can be hard to clean if the loops are wound tightly together. The different types of loop pile carpet include:

  • Berber
  • Cut and loop
  • Pattern multi-level loop

Cleaning tips: Loop pile carpet fibres are twisted and looped together tightly which can cause dirt, water and stains to build up. However, this type of carpet responds well to steam cleaning, which should be performed every 6 – 12 months.

How to Remove Stains from Different Carpet Fabrics?

To remove stains effectively, it helps to know what fabric your carpet is made from. Here are the most common carpet fabrics and the best ways to eliminate stains:

  • Wool. Use white wine vinegar mixed with warm water for tough stains. Blot and wipe the stain gently, as scrubbing can damage wool.
  • Nylon. Dip a clean rag in warm water and dab the stain as soon as you see it. If the stain doesn’t budge, add a little dish soap to the water solution.
  • Blend. Mix a little dish soap in warm water and dab that over the stain. Rinse with a clean, damp cloth and dab dry with another cloth.
  • Polyester. Stains on a polyester carpet can be removed with a synthetic carpet cleaner that can be purchased at any local store.
